The Bissaya Barreto maternity hospital
 is on the verge of collape in care,
says the Regional Section of the Center of the Medical Association,
facing what it says is the "unbearable lack of means" in that unit.

The Bissaya Barreto maternity hospital in Coimbra
is on the verge of collapse in the face of what
the Regional Section of the Center for the Doctors' (SRCOM) says
is the "unbearable lack of means" in that health unit.

está à beira do colapso assistencial
face àquilo que a Secção Regional do Centro da Ordem dos Médicos (SRCOM)
diz ser a “incomportável escassez de meios” naquela unidade de saúde.

In a statement sent Monday to the Lusa news agency ,
SRCOM reveals that it has so far received, 
28 statements of responsibility of doctors of Bissaya Barreto,
protesting against what he classifies as "unprecedented",
where these reveal the "worrying" situation
that is experienced in the institution.

Em comunicado enviado esta segunda-feira à agência Lusa,
a SRCOM revela que recebeu, até ao momento,
28 declarações de responsabilidade de médicos da Bissaya Barreto,
protesto que classifica de “inédito”,
onde estes revelam a situação “preocupante”
que se vive na instituição.

"The situation is alarming, and very serious.
The physicians of this maternity hospital
consider that the reality is so worrying, that in this document,
they explain the warnings of the serious risks existent there
for the health of women and children,"
warns Carlos Cortes,
the president of SRCOM.

“A situação é alarmante, muito grave.
Os médicos desta maternidade consideram
que a realidade é de tal modo preocupante, que, neste documento,
explicitam os alertas para os graves riscos ali existentes
para a saúde das mulheres e das crianças”,
avisa, na nota, Carlos Cortes,
presidente da SRCOM.

According to the communiqué, at stake are consultations and surgeries,
as well as the functioning of the emergency department
and the differential perinatal support, due to the lack of pediatricians,
gynecologists and obstetricians "
whose shortage the Ministry of Health
hasn't solved for several years," he says.

Em causa, de acordo com o comunicado,
está a realização de consultas e cirurgias,
bem como o funcionamento do serviço de urgência
e o apoio peri-natal diferenciado,
devido à falta de médicos pediatras, ginecologistas e obstetras
“cuja escassez o ministério da Saúde não resolve há vários anos”, assinala.

"For more than eight years, there has been no hiring of pediatricians.
For almost a decade, there has been a severe shortage of means,
which is only lessened by the dedication of the professionals,
to be able to meet up with the norms of the specialty schools,"
Carlos Cortes said.
The president of the regional section of the Medical Association
warns of an imminent "collapse" and demands
"haste" in solving the "most serious" problems.

“Há mais de oito anos que não há contratação de pediatras.
Há quase uma década que se assiste a uma tal escassez de meios
que só com a dedicação dos profissionais,
 é possível cumprir com as normas dos colégios da especialidade”,
adianta Carlos Cortes.
O presidente da secção regional da Ordem dos Médicos
alerta para o “colapso” e exige “rapidez”
na resolução dos problemas “mais graves”.

In the statement of responsibility that the physicians are signing "massively",

Na declaração de responsabilidade que os médicos estão a assinar “massivamente”,
lê-se, segundo a SRCOM, o seguinte:
“Sem prejuízo do dever de assegurar a sua prestação clínica
de forma consentânea com os seus conhecimentos e experiência profissional,
a situação supra reportada é susceptível de fazer incorrer
os doentes em risco e, em consequência disso, o/a signatário /a
em responsabilidade médica, disciplinar e penal”.

"There is a striking attempt to stifle the Hospital
and the University Center of Coimbra,

was eliminated from the plan of activities of the Ministry of Health,"
argues Carlos Cortes.
The communiqué concludes with
the "imminent possibility" of the Bissaya Barreto maternity hospital,
"to see its activity compromised and to be unable to respond
in some sensitive areas of the health of women and children."

“Existe uma tentativa notória de asfixiar o Centro Hospitalar
e Universitário de Coimbra, na sua importante componente
de cuidados de saúde na área materno-infantil.
É notório que este centro hospitalar
foi eliminado do plano de actividades do ministério da Saúde”,
argumenta Carlos Cortes. 

O comunicado conclui com a “possibilidade iminente”
da maternidade Bissaya Barreto “ver a sua actividade comprometida
e de estar impossibilitada de dar resposta nalgumas áreas sensíveis
da saúde da mulher e da criança”.
