São habitualmente referidos como bombeiros espanhóis, 

mas nem são bombeiros 

– são 3.500 militares especialmente vocacionados 

para lidar com catástrofes, como inundações e incêndios. 

Estão baseados em 5 cidades espanholas, 

a partir de onde podem chegar 

a qualquer ponto de Espanha em poucas horas, 

em caso de emergência. 

They are usually referred to as Spanish firefighters, 

but they are not even firefighters 

- they are 3,500 specially trained soldiers   

to deal with catastrophes such as floods and fires. 

They are based in 5 Spanish cities, 

from where they can reach any point in Spain 

in a few hours, 

in case of emergency.

Os jornais espanhóis têm sido bastante críticos 

em relação à desorganização no combate a incêndios em Portugal. 

Primeiro foram os artigos publicadas no El Mundo 

sob o pseudónimo de Sebastião Pereira 

a seguir à tragédia de Pedrógão, 

a falar em “caos” e “gestão desastrosa”. 

Depois, um artigo do El Español 

enumerou várias falhas no combate aos incêndios, 

que apontou uma das causas 

para o fim da aparente lua-de-mel entre o governo de António Costa 

e a maioria dos portugueses.

Spanish newspapers have been quite critical 

of the disorganization of fire fighting in Portugal. 

First, the newspaper, El Mundo, published  articles 

under the pseudonym of Sebastião Pereira,

 following the tragedy of Pedrógão, 

speaking about the "chaos" and "the disastrous management 

of the firefighting in Portugal". 

Then, another article in the El Español, 

listed several flaws in the portuguese firefighting, 

which pointed as one of the causes 

 the end of the apparent honeymoon

 between the radical socialist-marxist government of António Costa 

and most of the Portuguese.

Os espanhóis que estiveram a lutar contra as labaredas no terreno, 

apontaram como pontos negativos, 

além da falta de limpeza das nossas florestas, 

apenas concordam que não veem em Portugal 

tantos caminhos corta-fogo como em Espanha, 

o que facilita a progressão das chamas.

The Spaniards who have been fighting the flames in the field, 

pointed out as negative points, besides the lack of cleaning of our forests, 

only agree that they do not see in Portugal, fire-clearances as in Spain, which facilitates the progression of the flames in Portugal.

Um deles acredita que em Espanha talvez o fogo 

não tivesse ganho estas proporções catastróficos: 

“Temos meios aéreos e acho que o fogo 

não ia chegar a este ponto”.

One of them believes that in Spain perhaps the fire

 would not have gained these catastrophic proportions: 

"We have aerial means and I think that the fire 

would not have reached such a point".

O centralismo portugueses, foi apontado por um dos espanhóis 

como um dos problemas: 

“Parece que às vezes estão à espera de decisões de Lisboa, 

o que é incrível. 

Em Espanha cada comunidade autónoma, 

assume maior responsabilidade”.

The Portuguese centralism, was also pointed out 

as one of the problems,

by one of the Spaniards: 

"It seems that sometimes the portuguese

 are waiting for decisions from Lisbon, 

which is quite incredible. 

In Spain, each autonomous community, 

takes on greater responsibility. "

Outro olhou à volta e apontou um ligeiro reparo,

 à má forma física de alguns bombeiros portugueses, 

mais barrigudos, com quem se cruza no terreno: 

“Nós somos todos magritos. Fazemos uma hora de treino por dia”.

Another looked around and pointed out 

the poor physical form 

of some of the more potbellied portuguese firemen 

he had came across in the field: 

"We are all thin and fit. 

We do one hour of training a day. "

Os Espanhóis só fazem turnos de 12 horas 

e descansem outra 12 horas.

Os portugueses fazem turnos de 24 horas.

The Spaniards only take turns for 12 hours 

and rest for another 12 hours. 

The Portuguese do 24-hour shifts.

Um elemento da Unidade Militar de Emergências espanhol, 

em início de carreira, ganha cerca de 1.340 euros líquidos, 

mais subsídios adicionais por cada deslocação, 

seguro de vida e seguro privado de saúde.

A member of the Spanhish Emergency Military Unit, 

at the beginning of his career, 

earns about 1,340 euros net, 

plus additional allowances for each displacement,

a life insurance and a private health insurance.

“Em Portugal, praticamente não há incentivos: 

os voluntários recebem 45 euros por cada turno de 24 horas; 

retiraram-lhes a isenção das taxas moderadoras 

e a majoração na contagem do tempo para a reforma”, 

lamenta ao Observador Jaime Marta Soares, 

presidente da Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses, 

que apontou também uma grande diferença nos meios, 

por haver tantas viaturas portuguesas antigas 

a precisar de serem substituídas 

e, claro, a falta de aviões: 

“Em Espanha têm 19 Canadairs, 

nós não temos nenhum”.

"In Portugal, there are practically no incentives:

the volunteers receive 45 euros for each 24-hour shift; 

They have withdrawn their exemption from the moderating fees 

and the increase in the time for the reform, "

laments to the Observer, Jaime Marta Soares, 

president of the Portuguese Firemen's League, 

who also pointed out a great difference in the media, 

because there were so many old Portuguese vehicles 

in need to be replaced and, of course, and the lack of airplanes: 

"In Spain there are 19 Canadairs, 

we do not have any."

Outra diferença significativa: 

o SIRESP espanhol não é um escândalo permanente, 

como em Portugal. 

Chama-se SIRDEE 

(Sistema de Radiocomunicaciones Digitales de Emergencia del Estado) 

e embora não seja infalível, 

como admitem vários dos militares espanhóis, 

praticamente não é tema na actualidade política espanhola. 

A viatura de comunicações, 

com uma antena parabólica via satélite no tejadilho, 

é uma das mais vistosas da Unidade Militar de Emergências 

– não há quem não a tenha visto 

e comentado junto ao Posto de Comando de Mação. 

Trouxeram 49 viaturas no total, incluindo 4 cisternas, 

12 auto-bombas, veículos de apoio e dois autocarros, 

segundo Alberto Vazquez, assessor de imprensa da UME.

Another significant difference: 

the Spanish SIRESP is not a permanent scandal, as in Portugal. 

It is called SIRDEE 

(Digital Emergency Radiocommunication System of the State) 

and although it is not infallible, 

as admitted by several of the Spanish military, 

it is practically not a subject of contempt 

in the present Spanish political scene. 

The communications vehicle, with a satellite dish on the roof, 

is one of the most eye-catching of the Emergency Military Unit 

- there is no one who has not seen it and commented on it 

at the Mação Command Post. 

They brought 49 vehicles in total, 

including 4 cisterns, 

12 auto-pumps, support vehicles and two buses, 

according to Alberto Vazquez, UME's press officer.
