The Socialist Leftist faction today
called for the resignation of the Secretary General of the PS, António Costa,
demanding the holding of new primary elections for the leadership
of the party and setting a date for a congress
to discuss the "doctrinal renewal" of the party.
These positions are contained in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency,
by the the new Left Socialist Review, led by Fonseca Ferreira,
former chairman of Coordination and Development of Lisbon Regional
and the Tagus Valley,
which sided with the António Seguro's management of the Socialist Party.
A Corrente de Opinião Esquerda Socialista
pediu hoje a demissão do secretário-geral do PS,
reclamando a realização de eleições primárias para a liderança
e a marcação de um congresso para “renovação doutrinária” do partido.
Estas posições constam de um comunicado enviado à agência Lusa
pela Corrente de Opinião Esquerda Socialista,
liderada por Fonseca Ferreira,
antigo presidente da Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional de Lisboa
e Vale do Tejo, que esteve ao lado das direções de António José Seguro no PS.
For this current within the PS,
who claims to be the left wing of the party,

Para essa sensibilidade do PS,
que se reclama da ala esquerda do partido,
“impõe-se que António Costa assuma as suas responsabilidades e as consequências
dos seus atos e fracassos, não sacrificando os interesses do país
e o PS às suas ambições pessoais”.
“Impõe-se” também, segundo a mesma corrente
“que se abra um processo sereno e consistente, de reflexão e debate,
conduzindo a um congresso clarificador e à necessária renovação doutrinária e programática
– à luz das realidades do mundo contemporâneo –
e à abertura e democratização da sua organização e funcionamento”.
In the same statement, signed by Fonseca Ferreira,
he argues that the election of the Secretary General of the PS
should be "in open primaries".

becomes again a party of causes and purposes,
a party interested in the solidary development of the country,
regaining the confidence of its citizens and voters.

defende-se que a eleição do secretário-geral do PS
deverá ser feita “em primárias abertas“.
“A Corrente de Opinião Esquerda Socialista entende que
é chegada a hora do PS voltar a ser um partido de causas e desígnios,
um partido impulsionador do desenvolvimento solidário do país,
recuperando a confiança dos cidadãos e dos eleitores.
Estamos certos de que a maioria dos socialistas
e dos portugueses nos acompanham nesta preocupação,
nesta exigência e nesta esperança”, sustenta-se ainda.
After a brief analysis of the results of the legislative elections,
the Socialist Left current, addresses several attacks on the Secretary General of the PS

of the current leadership, its sectarianism and the lack of a clear strategy.

Após uma breve análise aos resultados das eleições legislativas,
a Corrente de Esquerda Socialista dirige vários ataques ao secretário-geral do PS
e à sua direcção,
considerando-se designadamente que o
“fracasso eleitoral extravasa razões estruturais
relacionadas com a crise do socialismo e da social-democracia”.
“Esta derrota é motivada, sobretudo,
pelo défice de legitimidade ética da actual liderança,
pelo seu sectarismo e ausência de uma estratégia clara.
Os eleitores não se reconheceram nesta liderança,
nem na manifesta errância política
e programática da campanha realizada”, aponta-se no texto.
In this sense, "António Costa has lost all legitimacy,
is deeply weakened and his tenure as Secretary-General will expose the PS

Nesse sentido, esta corrente entende que
“António Costa perdeu legitimidade,
encontra-se profundamente fragilizado
e a sua permanência como secretário-geral vai expor o PS a um desgaste fatal,
entalado entre uma direita relegitimada (ainda que relativamente)
e uma esquerda radical que ganhou fôlego e se propõe chantagear o PS e tudo exigir”.
