The bodies of the dead lying on the motorway in white bags
Contrary to what the President has said,
the time has come for Portugal to take a hard look at the organization
of forestry in Portugal.
Successive governments spend millions each year,
to equip the firefighters with the best equipment possible.
Some firefighters are just young boys or girls,
with NO EXPERIENCE
with NO EXPERIENCE
of firefighting nor first aid.
Some do it as a tempory job, with free meals and lots of fun,
during the period when there are no fires!
during the period when there are no fires!
Further, the government had spent 400 million euros,
on an emergency communication system,
which HAS NEVER functioned properly in times of crisis,
than ks to the brilliance of the the PM Sócrates
and the minister of Internal Affairs,
António Costa, the current unelected PM!.
than ks to the brilliance of the the PM Sócrates
and the minister of Internal Affairs,
António Costa, the current unelected PM!.
Millions of euros of tax payers money, are spent on studies,
MORE studies, and MORE endless studies,
which NEVER reach any conclusions
and are NEVER put into practice!!
EVERY year the phemonema repeats itself with clock work precision.
With the most horrible forest fires,
the televisons station reporters working overtime,
to have the spectecle always present in front of their audiences' eyes,
Politicians rush to the scenes in false solidarity,
driven to the scene in their luxury air-conditioned cars,
always praising the firemen, but when they go home,
and the smoke dies down,
they forget about the problems facing Portugal each and every year!!
HOT; DRY SUMMERS with tinder dry vegetation,
asking for the smallest excuse to
brust into the most destructive disaster!
There is a glaring, ever widedening void,
of political leadership in Portugal.
of political leadership in Portugal.
The men in power are just worried about electoral results.
In their comfortable air-conditioned cabinets,
the REAL Portugal does not exist.
the REAL Portugal does not exist.
ONLY THEIR POWER GAMES; THEIR LUXURIOUS LIVES;
their top range air-conditioned luxury cars,
with several motorists always at hand,
their fat salary cheques and benefits,
holidays in exotic places,
with several motorists always at hand,
their fat salary cheques and benefits,
holidays in exotic places,
are important.
The socialist-communist government
just rules for the public servants,
which consist of 13% of the portuguese population,
just rules for the public servants,
which consist of 13% of the portuguese population,
sitting in their air-conditioned cabinets,
televisions and radios blaring talk-shows,
televisions and radios blaring talk-shows,
doing bloody NOTHING, in most cases, receiving good salaries,
and generous private pension funds,
even having a special health care fund,
even having a special health care fund,
with millions of other priviledges for the public servants
from which the common portuguese are excluded!!
Who the f*ck cares about the isolated villages,
where there is nothing but misery, poverty and old, sick people,
(if they died in a fire, so much better, because the state can stop paying
their meager pesions of €315, contributing to a better deficit.
There are no public transports, no doctors, no health centres,
in these forgotten villages.
in these forgotten villages.
Nothing!!
All that these poor people have, is their ancestors' memory,
their children and grandchildren, who live in the faraway big cities,
of Portugal or of Europe.
They have old, falling-apart houses, a few domestic animals; a few sheep,
two or three goats, a few chickens, perhaps even a pig or two,
and a piece of land, where they plant some cabbages, and potatoes,
for soup - their daily food.
These old, infirm citizens live abandoned
by the fat politicians of Lisbon.
by the fat politicians of Lisbon.
Their fate has been sealed by the general neglect of the rural populations.
In a country of rife corruption on the highest political level,
these honest, humble people don't count.
In the arrogance of the political caste,
their rural humbleness, is a screaming embarrassment,
because Portugal, is the BEST.
It's better to hide these poor people from the eyes of Brussels,
Washington or Paris -
and remember - no critisism is allowed.
Washington or Paris -
and remember - no critisism is allowed.
ALL IS WELL; BE HAPPY; KEEP SMILING!!
The fire of Pedrógão Grande may have had the most extraordinary origins,
but it occurred in a region, at a time of the year and in a meteorological context
in which forest fires are nothing extraordinary.
It happens EVERY YEAR!!
There has been a GROSS FAILURE OF CIVIL PROTECTION!
The weather office issued a red alert of extreme temperatures of over 42ºCelsius
for 4 regions of Portugal for Saturday and Sunday.
WHY wasn't a warning of an extreme risk of forest fire emmitted?
WHY weren't the rural populations of the affected areas
put on high alert for the possibility of forest fires??
Why weren't any means prepared in case of such an eventuality?
And when the fire did break out,
WHY, dear lord WHY? weren't the roads closed on time
to prevent the death of 47 persons,
burned to death in their cars, or trying to flee the inferno,
that they were caught up in?
According to survivors, they were actually
sent down the ROAD OF DEATH by traffic authorities!!
No Mr, President,
NOT EVERYTHING WAS DONE
AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE!!
Portugal is a country of artificial GOOD NEWS!!
Not to spoil our image internationally, of course!!
It could ruin the tourism or the foreign investments!!
But in this country, there are only politicians responsible for good news.
For the exit of the excessive deficit,
No one has invoked the favourable external environment
or the painful 2011-2014 adjustment period,
that prepared the way for today's success.
after a calamitious bankrupcy,
But for a tragedy of Pedrógão Grande,
there is NO-ONE to take responsibility
for what really happened.
Everyone speaks eloquently about nature, the temperatures,
the winds, the dry thunderstorms,
and especially of the mysterious conjugation of all kinds of fatalities,
to cause a perfect disaster.
TALK; TALK; TALK;!!
NO ACTION!
NO PREVENTION!!
It is curious to note, in this respect, the contrast
between the Portuguese regime and the British regime,
in the face of dramas of similar magnitude.
In London, 58 people were killed last week in the fire of an apartment block.
Since then, a public discussion began.
The prime minister was confronted,
resignations were demanded.
As in any democracy, when some tragedy happens
there must be consequences.
What could have PREVENTED the tragedy from happening?
In Portugal ALL IS WELL
NO QUESTIONS ARE ASKED;
NO RESPONSIBILITIES ARE ATTRIBUTED;
THE CULPRITS GET AWAY SCOTFREE
NO RESPONSIBILITIES ARE ATTRIBUTED;
THE CULPRITS GET AWAY SCOTFREE
AS USUAL!!
There are NO POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES!!
In the case of Pedrógão, after the initial accident
(in this case, a supposed dry thunderstorm),
(in this case, a supposed dry thunderstorm),
the type of forest with which, the State had chosen to cover
the old Portuguese landscape of bare moorland and sand,
for more than a century, were the so-called economic species,
such as pine tress and eucalyptus.
And so, with the help of a dry summer climate and the uneven,
extremely difficult terrain of the countryside,
the perfect scene was set for the "fire season",
supposed to have started ONLY on the 1st of July!!
supposed to have started ONLY on the 1st of July!!
The continued massive rural exodus to the big cities
and emigration to European cities and even to Africa,
things were made worse by transforming the so-called "forest"
into a huge, abandoned bush, completely surrounding roads and settlements.
Every year there are fires and every year the "experts"
make the rounds of the television news stations' talk-shows.
However, NOTHING ever changes.
Too many of the portuguese population,
especially the most vulnerable part of the population,
such as the poor rural elderly, are left at the mercy of their own fate.
Year after year, they are subjected to a fatal Russian roulette from forest fires.
It was disgusting to watch on TV the helplessness of these miserable people.
Who is responsible?
It will never been known,
because the oligarchy soon began to decree the period "national unity",
so that no annoying questions would be asked
or uncomfortable debates be scheduled.
Instead there were lots of crocodile tears and emotion, hugs,
and affection spread around:
another cheap case of coating the bitter pill
refusing to FACE THE CRUELTY
OF THE REALITY OF THE PORTUGUESE PEOPLE!!.
Never mind, the judgement day is coming!!
OF THE REALITY OF THE PORTUGUESE PEOPLE!!.
Never mind, the judgement day is coming!!
