José Socrates, inmate 44, ex- socialist Prime Minister
After a prolonged period of golden silence,
Mr. Sócrates, decided to break into the selective bad memory
of a nation, by writing letters to television stations and newspapers,
claiming to be a "political prisoner".
"Operation Marquês was made to
"condition the next elections and prevent the PS's victory"
"As time passes,
the legitimate suspicion grows
that this process has as its only real motivation,
the conditioning of the next elections and to prevent the victory of the PS.
As it turns out, it has nothing to do with justice, but with politics "
said J. Sócrates.
José Sócrates, suspected of corruption,
tax fraud and money laundering,
also said that "justice has committed, in this case,
a monstrous mistake"
and says the process has been erratic,
going "from one theory to the other,
each time, until coming up against the truth. "
"The 'corrupting agent' began as a group of companies
of engineer Carlos Santos Silva,
then it was the Lena Group,
but evolved later, without the blinking of an eye,
to tourism and real estate developers
with interests in Algarve,
exploring new market opportunities in the Brazilian market. "
At the end of the five-page letter,
José Sócrates still left a note on the investigation
for money-laundering of Makhdoom Ali Khan,
the former attorney general of the Pakistani millionaire,
who, subjected to the Golden visa program,
bought the former prime minister's house,
on Braamcamp Street in Lisbon:
"The only reason for the investigation,
appears to be that this was my apartment.
It is no longer a question of respect due to people and their rights,
but it is to lose the respect that the Justice Ministry owes itself. "
Meanwhile, Socialist Euro deputy,
Ana Gomes said:
"In Portugal, ONLY Socrates thinks of himself as a political prisoner.
No one else confirms that he is in fact a political prisoner,
he is charged with economic crimes, corruption and money laundering,
and therefore the Portuguese Justice system,
has to do their job well, "
stressed the Socialist MEP
(Member of the European Parliament).
