Sócrates' declaration and refusal in his own words.

STATEMENT

"My prison is a huge and cruel injustice.
Six months without any charge.
Six months without access to the file of accusation.
Six months of a furious media campaign of slaundering and defamation,
permitted, if not directed, by the public prosecutor himself.
Six months of false, absurd and worse - unfounded accusations,
which means that prosecutors could not, nor should, accuse me,
because the accusations are not supported by any evidence,
nor based on any facts.
Six months, in short, of political decision and abuse.

Having arrived here, each one should assume their responsibilities.
My prison is a violence unfairly imposed against me,
but it was unilaterally imposed.
I have always protested and shown my repudiation;
never by my silence, much less with my assent.
Now, the prosecution proposed a house arrest with electronic surveillance,
which still means prison, only now it needs my consent.
I could never, in all conscience, accept it.

On the other hand, I can not ignore - nor condone - to what, today,
is for me, before our eyes:
the preventive imprisonment is used to investigate,
to depersonalize, to break, to shut up,
to obtain, who knows what kind of "confessions "
.I also do not ignore - or agree - with the use of house arrest
with electronic surveillance as a smoothing tool,
designed to correct errors, so as to look like they were never committed.
These "half-releases" have no other purpose
than to disguise the original error and the successive failure:
after six months in prison there are no facts or evidence nor accusation.
I meditated at length on this decision,
but my answer is "NO!"

José Sócrates

WHAT VICTIMIZATION!!
