José Sócrate, ex-socialist Prime Minister
After the public prosecutor
(a law officer who conducts criminal proceedings
on behalf of the government or in the public interest),
recommended the liberation
of José Sócrates,
who would be under house arrest
with an electronic bracelet.
José Sócrates, himself, wrote an open letter,
refusing house arrest with an electronic
bracelet, saying that he would still be imprisoned,
that he will not accept such a humiliation
against his "dignity"!
His lawyers are trying to protrait Sócrates as a
political prisoner, as a political martyr,
while serious accusations of corruption, fiscal fraude,
and money laundering hangs over his head.
He organised a complicated network of fraudulent
companies or entities,
in offshore or fiscal paradises,
where more than 23 million euros are involved
which unfortunately doesn't qualify for the status as a political prisoner.
As a result of his refusal to be submitted to house arrest,
the judge had no other option to maintain him in
prison on probation,
as he, himself refused the house arrest alternative!
BEGGARS CAN'T BE CHOSERS,
Mr Sócrates!!
NOBODY SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW,
whether an ex-PM or a humble bank clerk or
any other criminal.
There are no UNTOUCHABLES any more!!
By his own choice,
Sócrates will remain in prison in Évora
for the next 3 months.
