Sonnet Ehlers, a South African woman,
invented an anti-rape device, which she called Rapex, later renamed
Rape-aXe.
Ehlers was motivated to create this device,
while working as a blood technician
for the South African Blood Transfusion Service.
Due to her work she came into contact with innumerous rape victims.
Sexual violence and rape is nearly endemic in South Africa.
She got the idea of the anti-rape condom, when a rape victim told her:
"if only I had teeth down there" to take revenge on her attacker.

Made in the form of a latex sheath,
embedded with shafts of sharp, inward facing barbs,
Rape-aXe can be worn by a woman inside her vagina
like a female condom.
When an attacker rapes his victim,
his penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs,
causing the attacker excruciating pain during withdrawal,
allowing the victim time and opportunity to excape.

The condom will remain attached to the rapist's penis
and can ONLY be removed surgically,
which would alert hospital staff and the police.
Just like any other condom,
Rape-aXe, will also prevent pregnancy and the transmission of HIV
and other sexually transmitted infections.

Criticism
calling it: "vengeful, horrible, and disgusting"
Some critics even called it a medieval instrument, based on man-hating notions,
while ignoring the basic nature of rape and violence against women in society.
Sonnet Ehlers responded to criticism on her website, saying:
"As with everything in life, there will be negative attitudes
and I can't be responsible for people
who refuse to educate men
and regard Rape-aXe as medieval,
Rape-aXe is a medieval device for a medieval deed!"
Other critics fear that using the condom, would only enrage an attacker
putting the victim's life in danger.
Ehlers answers:
"Sadly, many women have been killed over time,
as nobody can garantee the outcome of rape.
However, the huge plus-factor is that the pain and discomfort
is so intense, that the rapist is temporarily disabled,
giving the victim time to flee and get help".
