The temporary unemployment rate fell to 12.1% in July,
the INE (national institute of statistics) revealed today.
The rate is two tenths below the rate registered in June.
The Economic Daily did the maths,
and found that it is necessary to go back to October 2010 to find an equal number.
Five years ago, this month,
the unemployment rate was fixed at 12%.
These are excellent figures, as the unemployment rate
soared to 18% during the heat of the bail-out crisis.
The number of unemployed persons in July, was 624,900,
which represents a decrease by 0.7%.
The employed population have increased by 24,900 people
(or 0.6%) from the previous month.
According to the data released today,
there was a decrease in the unemployed population of women (1.6%) = 5100),
adults (0.7%) = 3700) and of the youth population (0.9%) = 1.0 mil ),
while the unemployed rate for men remained virtually unchanged.
These estimates were made, considering the population
aged between 15 to 74 years
and the values were previously adjusted to seasonal employment.
The CDS-PP said today that the decrease of 0.2 percentage points
in the unemployment rate,
reflects the increased confidence in the economy,
which captures more investment,
which in turn serves as a generator of jobs.
With 5 thousand more women employed,
3,700 more adults employed,
and a thousand more youths employed,
it is indeed good news.
Despite all the hardships, sufferings and high unemployment rates,
during the crisis,
the Portuguese can now have new hope,
new confidence in a better future.
"We understand that these numbers reinforce the trust
and hope in what have been accomplished during these last four years.
At this moment, the country has more investors,
more entrepreneurs, who are more confident in the economy,
thereby capturing more investment
and this investment can combat the big social problem
which is unemployment, "
Nuno Magalhães (Member of the European Parliament)
told the Lusa news agency.
Nuno Magalhães pointed out that the country
"succeeded in overcoming a very difficult adjustment process,
caused by the former socialist government,
but now, four years later,
the numbers show a level of unemployment
that are the best of twenty consecutive quarters."
"It shows that there is a consistent and solid recovery
that allows us to build confidence and hope
on the extremely difficult path we have travelled," he said.
