Socialists smell the sweet fragrance of power, full of doubts

António Costa, socialist mayor of Lisbon

The Mayor of Lisbon, António Costa,
the capital's socialist candidate in the local municipal elections in September,
said today that he does not know if the PS (Socialist Party)
would win a hypothetical legislative election to the right
and called on
"reformists around the world to unite."

Obviously the socialists are getting the jitters,
feeling quite insecure and are now in favour of "electoral reforms",
creating bonds between the elected and the voters.
Quite a change of mood for those
who have never been in favour of any reforms.
All socialists are joining forces,
together with ex-PM José Sócrates
and ex-President, Jorge Sampaio,
is what seems to be a desperate effort of
trying to unite the leftists parties.

António Costa criticized
the "lack of a culture of consensus, negotiation or agreement,"
particularly with other opposition parties,
since "the rightwing parties easily solve this problem,
with more or less ease.

"The problem is with the leftists parties
where it was never possible to come to an understanding
which could generate credible solutions of governance," he said.

Calling on disunited leftists to unite,

with the fragrance of power in their nostrils
seems to be a contradition of facts.
Even the socialists are enjoying an enforced rotten peace,
trying to show a united front,
while each faction is dilligently sharpening their knives for the
adversaries within their own fold.
