Another well-known, famous portuguese artist, Maria João Pires, the internationally acclaimed pianist, abandons Portugal, and renounces portuguese citizenship. She has become completely disillusioned with the lack of cultural support from Mr. José Socrates' Socialist government, for her artistic educational project in Belgais, Castelo Branco. She has opted for Brazilian citizenship and has made Brazil her new homeland and place of residence.
Maria João Pires is just one of hundreds of artists, intellectuals, and other highly qualified specialists and scientists as well as many other ordinanry people, leaving Portugal on a permanent basis for other countries, in protest of the unjust and ineffective government policies of the Socialists, led by Mr. José Socrates.
